Vintage wedding photography in Pickering – a unique wedding in North Yorkshire

Great idea for a vintage wedding

(See below for vintage wedding photos)

Vintage weddings are all the rage right now. This beauty of a wedding from 2004 is as vintage as vintage weddings get. It came to mind when I was considering wedding ideas to include in my recent different weddings article. Originally I would have considered it a themed wedding, but the vintage theme is currently very popular. Certainly it is different and unique. It was not only amazingly good fun to photograph, it was at times unbelievably moving.

How to plan a different wedding – thinking outside the box

Mel and Jan’s idea for a different wedding was original to say the least. It bordered on genius even. They wanted a vintage wedding wearing 1940s uniforms and outfits. Their guests would all wear full vintage wedding outfits from the same period. The Great Hall at Duncombe Park was the wedding ceremony venue. It was a very fitting setting for the occasion. The real genius is that they chose the Pickering war weekend to be married. This meant that the whole of Pickering was also in costume on the day. Thousands of people, hundreds of vehicles. All from the 1940s era, the setting would unwittingly provide a truly authentic backdrop to a fabulous vintage wedding day in North Yorkshire.

On the morning of the wedding groom Mel and his guests gathered (fully regaled) at The Worsley Arms in Hovingham. The hotel itself displayed war time posters and war time newspapers. The entrances were sand-bagged, a Union Flag flew by the front door. Everyone travelled into Pickering by 1920s bus. They headed for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where many of the activities took place. They were involved in re-enactments on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway platforms and an air raid. Afterwards Mel and his uncle went into Pickering town centre to march in the remembrance parade. Even now I recall how moving the morning was, aside from the fact that it was Mel and Jan’s wedding day.

The guests had lunch back in Hovingham – beef and turnip stew with dumplings. They then headed for Duncombe Park in North Yorkshire for the ceremony itself.

In the meantime bride Jan was getting ready at The Black Swan in Helmsley. She travelled with her friend in a period car to Duncombe Park for a splendid civil ceremony in The Great Hall. A brief reception was held on the terraces before everyone went back to The Worsley Arms for cream teas in the afternoon, and then dinner. Even the confetti was vintage – real flower petals as they would have been just after WW2.

This vintage wedding had a cast of thousands. It had a massive vintage backdrop. The venues suited the chosen theme. Guests wore authentic vintage costumes and uniforms. You just had to be there.

It was different on a humongous scale. It was a privilege to have been part of it.
