Mansion House York Weddings – Helen and Tim

Mansion House Weddings, York

In early December last year we photographed a deep dark December winter wedding at The Mansion House in York. After a late civil ceremony, the bride and groom – Helen and Tim, had a drinks and canapé reception, before heading out into the streets of York for some late evening winter wedding photography. It had been raining for much of the afternoon, so we were lucky to catch a break in the weather.

We had some fun in St Helen’s Square using Betty’s Tea Shop as an unusual and colourful backdrop – York’s Christmas shoppers looked on in bemused dismay. We did some lovely photographs in Stonegate, again with late shoppers looking on, and then moved on to The Minster. We were able to capture the essence of a wintery York for Helen and Tim’s wedding album, before they headed back for their wedding reception in the grand surroundings of The Mansion House.

I asked Helen to fill us in on some of their details…..

Tell us about your wedding day in your own words:-

We wanted an intimate informal winter wedding for close family and friends in a wonderful location, and we think that’s what The Mansion House in York provided

How did you meet?

We met at University in Bradford

How did you plan your wedding?

Very quickly! Tim proposed in July and we wanted a winter wedding and we didn’t want to have to wait for a year, so we got moving quickly! After making an initial guest list we knew we only wanted a small wedding – approx 50 people – so we started to look for small venues online. We decided on York as a venue, even though we live in Cambridge as for most guests they could drive home if they wanted or stay due to the different array of hotels in the city. Once we found the wedding venue everything else fell into place, using recommendations from other friends’ weddings and just searching online.

How did you choose your wedding venue?

We spent the day looking at venues in York, and nothing was right, too big, too small, or just not right. At the last place we looked we met Val from Poppies caterers (who eventually became our wedding caterers) and asked if she knew of any additional small wedding locations in York. She mentioned the Mansion House in York had just started doing weddings and suggested we pop along on the off chance of having a look around. From day one the staff at The Mansion House were very accommodating, they showed us round there and then we knew it was the right place for us as soon as we saw it!

What was the favourite part of your wedding day?

We loved all of it, but coming into the dining room with all our guests around the table was magical, the room looked stunning with all the candelabras lit.

Who supplied your dress?

Brides of York, I couldn’t recommend them enough, I came in wanting a dress completely out of my budget and they helped me find something just perfect in my price range, wonderful ladies!

Describe your dress to us.

The dress itself was a very plan taffeta gown by Romantica of Devon, close fitting with a slight A-line skirt with ruching throughout the bodice. To get a more individual style I teamed this with an ivory sash with crystals and lace and a lace bolero. For a slightly different look I changed my sash for a black one for the wedding breakfast.

Who supplied (please describe each)

Your shoes?

I didn’t want conventional Ivory shoes. I search for ages and finally found some gold shoes to match the colour scheme of the boys’ ties and the bridesmaid dress from Debenhams

Your flowers?

Louise @ Heaven Scent produced some lovely flower arrangements, simple and elegant! Hand tied bouquets of Anemones, Ranunculus and Tulips with green foliage and berries.

Your evening entertainment?

Having an early evening wedding we didn’t have any evening entertainment, just a huge Dickensian dinner in the main dining room. However during the wedding and the drinks reception the York string quartet played.

What advice would you give to future brides and grooms?

Enjoy your day, take everything in as it will pass by in a flash!
